The 5 Joint Commandments

Say goodbye to the days of floppy joints, relighting, and black ash. If you’re a joint smoker and haven’t studied this guide, you may be committing blasphemy. We’ll make sure you get the best smoke for yourself, and teach your friends how to not ruin the next cypher.

First Commandment: Good Flower = Good Smoke

Cheap flower ain’t good, and good flower ain’t cheap! Don’t cheat yourself and skimp out on quality flower. That old, dry, dusty stuff your buddy swears is “Straight Gas” isn’t cutting it. Come down to the shop, and grab some quality flower that matches the effects you want to feel.

Our house flower is farmed by trusted partners who work with us to maintain a varied selection of THCA flower that surpasses your expectations and won’t break the bank. With eights starting at $34.95, we definitely got something within your budget.

Second Command: Use the Right Tools for the Job

Everybody tends to overlook the grinder they use, and we feel that’s where a lot of people go wrong. Different grinders produce different results, and there’s not necessarily a “superior grinder.” Instead, we like to recommend a couple different ones based on your needs.

Looking for a fine grind? Grab a Santa Cruz Shredder.

Want to keep your bud more intact? Try out a Flower Mill, which pushes your flower apart instead of tearing it.

The more important important decision is: kief catch, or not to kief catch. We prefer the latter, as it allows you to enjoy your terps with every joint, but if you’re a bowl smoker too, we can’t knock you for collecting those precious terps.

Third Commandment: Roll It Right

If you want your joint to smoke right, roll it the right way. Up at LLU, we prefer OCB Bamboo Papers, as we feel they do the best job at maintaining a flavor profile. Whatever you choose to roll with, make sure your joint checks the following boxes:

  • Good Pressure: Not too tight, but not too loose. This’ll take a bit of figuring out since your flower determines how you’ll pack it, but as a rule of thumb aim for consistent density throughout.
  • Glass Tips: For a superior smoking experience, get yourself a glass tip. You’ll get smoother pulls, more robust flavors, and a slower burn.
  • When in Doubt, Cone it Out: If you’re still a novice at rolling, don’t feel embarrassed to use a cone. In fact, up your game with RAW DLX Glass Tipped Cones, the absolute best cones money can buy.

Fourth Commandment: Beat the Heat

Cypher after cypher, sesh after sesh, we’ve seen the same issue pop up: people let the cherry (glowing part of the joint) get too hot. The problem is, there’s so many different ways you can ruin the cherry, so we can’t blame our friends for not knowing. What we can do is educate them on how not to ruin our joints though.

Take your time, there’s no need to rush your hits. If someone passes you the joint, let the cherry go until it basically disappears.

Keep your drags short; aim for a strong hit of about two seconds. Instead of using your lungs, pull with your mouth like you would with a cigar.

Rotate the joint between hits. This is another tip from the cigar world. It helps maintain an even burn so you don’t deal with those pesky runs (canoeing).

Do not ash. That’s literally it, stop ashing your joints. The ash will fall when its ready to fall. Keeping the ash controls the heat.

Fifth Commandment: Enjoy the Smoke

None of this matters if you’re not enjoying your smoke. Get in your comfort zone, pull-up a book, movie, or whatever else makes you happy. Smoke with friends, or by yourself. Make the best out of every smoke, and every smoke will be good to you.
